Tofino, Canada

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

For those of you who have never been to Tofino, it feels as if you are at the edge of the world.  Situated on the west coast of Vancouver Island, nestled among densely populated old growth forests with the thundering waves of the Pacific Ocean pounding its shores, you will be awestruck by its wildness and natural beauty.  Whether it is mist and fog engulfing its coastline, dark clouds and heavy rains of a powerful winter storm or clear, sunny days with fantastic sunsets, Tofino is one of those rare places that is breathtaking no matter what the weather is.

When you are in Tofino it seems as though time is governed more by daylight and darkness than by your watch.  When it is light out, you are awake, active and outdoors and when it’s dark, you begin to wind down and rest for the next day.  It seems like a more natural way to live and a nice break or detox from a city dwellers’ life.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Tofino is paradise.  You can surf, hike, kayak, bike and walk the numerous nature trails year-round.  The air is fresh, and the lifestyle is laid-back.  Nobody is really in a rush and it’s a nice feeling to be able to slow down, if only for a few days.

While Tofino has a reputation for being rugged, it is not without a certain level of sophistication.  With some of the finest west coast cuisine and a few world class inns, those who require a higher standard of comfort will feel right at home.

One of my favourite things to experience in Tofino is a delicious fish fry.  There is nothing better than freshly caught seafood, fried to perfection and served with a tangy tartar sauce!
